Produce prescriptions (PRx) are an increasingly important Food as Medicine intervention. Ample evidence from federal and state programs demonstrates that eating more produce promotes positive health outcomes. No question: eating produce is fundamental to good health.
Sifter is the Food as Medicine Platform.

However, it's very labor intensive to identify, source, and box produce. PRx that use pre-paid benefit cards can reduce the manpower costs, but these programs need technology not only to correctly map and identify the produce that can be purchased, but to automate and scale the implementation.

Sifter's Food as Medicine platform does exactly this. Our industry-leading grocery data and technology ensure that all produce items that can be included in a PRx will be included, along with options for purchase at the store level. It's innovation that leads to efficiency gains in implementation and a smoother consumer experience. Here's how we do it:

• Accuracy. Sifter identifies eligible foods in produce by an approved product list (APL). Since we use item-level detail instead of category-level groupings, Sifter excludes unqualified items you don’t want in the APL — things like candy apples, painted pumpkins, and bagged salads with bacon and high-calorie dressing. Our APLs make sure the consumer gets exactly what you want them to purchase.

• Accessibility and affordability. Fresh produce can be expensive, is perishable, and in "food deserts" may be harder to find. PRx programs that include frozen, dried, and canned fruits and vegetables with no added sugar, salt, or fat solve this matter. We build produce APLs that extend into the center of the store, identifying only those items that match nutritional criteria. The result: consumers are presented with a wider variety of produce that's affordable, less wasteful, shelf-stable, and more convenient to use.

• Coordination with key FoodRx stakeholders. Sifter works with all fintech (i.e., payment system) providers to build a PRx card for your audience. Moreover, our technology can analyze any grocery retailer's products, quickly and accurately identifying eligible produce items, including where they can be purchased. Our expertise currently fuels a number of PRx APL programs across the U.S.

Sifter is the technology leader in the Food as Medicine space and a proud member of the National Produce Prescription Collaborative.
