More fruits and vegetables. Less red meat. Less sugar. Less salt. It's healthy-eating advice that the average American has heard time and time again. Yet most people struggle to follow it, even under a doctor’s recommendation.
Sifter is the Food as Medicine Platform.

Diet is a critical part of managing serious chronic health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease, but patients often rebel against eating restrictions. Part of the problem is that many prescriptive diets seem to limit choice and relegate patients to a boring routine of salads and uninteresting foods. Expanding choice is the key to making healthy eating more enjoyable and successful. Sifter makes that happen.

Sifter's Food as Medicine platform helps patients find a far wider variety of grocery foods that fit not only dietary recommendations, but their cultural identity and ingredient likes/dislikes. Our technology transforms the grocery shopping experience into a treasure hunt, guiding patients to healthy foods that are also familiar, simple to prepare, and readily available at their preferred supermarket.

The first step is creating the patient's "food script" using any combination of Sifter's 1,500+ attributes, which include complex chronic conditions (diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease), food allergens, lifestyle and ethical preferences, and ingredient likes/dislikes. Our technology identifies the grocery foods that fit these combined attributes by using algorithms developed by registered licensed dietitians and grounded in evidence-based nutrition care practices. It's innovative technology that earned Sifter a 2024 Health Value Award.

A patient uses this food script with Sifter's Scan By Diet technology to transform their smartphone into a grocery scanning machine. They learn, on the spot, whether the food or beverage fits their food script via a simple barcode scan. If the item doesn't fit, then eligible alternatives are shown. This powerful combination of personalization and technology allows patients to discover a far wider variety of eligible foods across all sections of the store (frozen, canned, convenience, dried, fresh), making it easier to stay on their dietary track.

When you help patients find "personal treasures" — foods that are both healthy and tasty for them — they are more likely to comply with dietary recommendations.
